Banning State Park

Aimee & I went up to Banning State Park over the weekend (Sat-Tues). When we first made our reservations I didn't think much about this park because it wasn't a park you hear people talk about like your Gooseberry, Itasca or Jay Cooke state parks. I was pleasantly surprised by Banning. Located just off of HWY 35 it's only a hour & half from the twin cities, just north of Sandstone hugging the Kettle River. Not only do you get to see the beautiful Kettle River, you also get a history lesson about the Banning Sandstone Quarry that once inhabited the site.

There was plenty of hiking trails to keep us busy. We hiked the Wolf Creek trail that brought us to Wolf Creek Falls. This waterfall was located among the large sandstone boulders close to the Kettle River. We then hit the High Bluff trail which is a large trail that is used by snowmobiles and XC skiers in the winter. This trail is not very scenic but you can view some wildlife such as deer and birds. High Bluff trail then connects to Quarry Loop which is a self guided trail that reveals the remains of the Banning Sandstone Quarry and the town of Banning. The trail is the old rail line that took the stone out of the quarry. You can see remains of the power house, stone crusher and school house. If you look towards the Kettle River you will also see Little Banning Rapids, Dragon's Tooth & Mother's Delight. If you head down the the boat ramp you can also get close view of Blueberry Slide. You then take the Spur Trail back up to the campground. I'm betting we spent about 5 hours on Sunday & Monday hiking. We also took Zoey on all of our hikes and she was quite the adventurist always staying in front of us jumping from one rock to another.

The campground was very nice. We figured since we are staying Saturday to Tuesday that many people would be leaving on Sunday which is what we saw. We did end up getting new neighbors behind us with some annoying young kids that couldn't separate their gummy bear brains from the latest handheld video game. Luckily they went to bed very early. Monday we got a fun surprise that someone was camping in the site across the road from us. We don't know what the hell was going on over there but there was a Mom with 2 dogs and 6 teenage kids with a total of 3 cars. The Mom disappeared Monday night leaving these annoying zit picking teens behind. These were your redneck, Slayer listening, I hate my parents teens. They were riding on the hoods of their cars down the road, yelling to each other and going in to the woods knocking down the trees for fire wood (which is illegal). And all you could hear was their frickin' cell phones beeping 24/7 with text messages going back and forth to each other. I know the Host of the campground was concerned about this group but he didn't really do anything. Oh well. Nothing we could do.

It was a great trip and I can't wait to explore another MN State Park!

Liking and Disliking

Disliking this weather. Come on now this is getting ridiculous! NO MORE RAIN!

Liking Sara Lee Honey Wheat toast with raspberry jam! Very tasty! Reminds me of when I was young and would spend a few weeks of the summer at my grandparents house.

Disliking not being able to ride my bike because the trails are too muddy and the rain will not stop.

Liking that we will be heading up to Banning State Park on Saturday and the weather looks outstanding.

Disliking all of the grass clippings that are being trampled into the house because they stick to the wet soles of our shoes.

Liking that Northern Exposure is in HD. I love this show!

Disliking work right now. We told the public that we would be out of mail-in rebates over a year ago but the SVP's keep on approving them which means I have to set them up.

Liking that Zoey is past the puppy phase.

Dislikig the "N" key on my work laptop. It doesn't like to work all of the time. nnnnnn

Liking that the powerball is up to $300 million.

Disliking that I will not win that $300 million.

Liking that the football & hockey season will be starting soon. You can only watch baseball for so long. I'm really hoping to go to a Wild game this year.

Disliking that damn Viva Viagra commercial. And you thought the FishPen commercial was bad?

Liking that the State Fair has now officially started. 12 days of non calorie counting, eat off a stick, people watching fun.

IMDB - Tengoku To Jigoku (1963)

Tengoku To Jigoku (1963) aka High and Low - Sorry it's been so long since I have reviewed one of the IMDB top 250's. I haven't really been in the mood to watch old movies let alone a Japanese movie with subtitles. Since it has been raining today I sat down and watched High and Low. High and Low was based on the novel "King's Ransom" by Ed McBain. I was presently surprised how good this movie was. The best part about watching a Japanese movie is when they get mad. It's just so aggressive and serious like daddy just hit mommy at the dinner table. Great movie so check it out on a rainy day.

8 out of 10 stars

Food For Thought

Why are Macaroni & Cheese Spirals so much better than regular Mac & Cheese? Is it because of their mesmerizing shape trapping cheesy goodness in every curved spiral? And why do they give you so much less in a box of spirals? A box of spirals has 140g if you combine the 2 serving sizes, regular Mac & Cheese has 210g combining all 3 servings. On top of that both are the same price but you get less spirals. Why is there a premium on spirals we will never know but I will still continue to support the Mac & Cheese Spiral nation.

Bustin' A Move

Pete & Anne invited us to Buster's On 28th Ave last night. We sat on the patio so no real review on what the atmosphere was like inside. We did get to experience crazy meth lady roaming from street corner to street corner. She was twitchier than a Catholic Priest eyeing down an alter boy. Waving her hands up in the air like she just didn't care and yelling at cars. I had a bacon cheeseburger & Aimee had the Buster's juicy lucy, both very tasty choices. I also got to try a few new beers. Murphy's Red was my first choice, extremely tasty, similar to a Killians but better. My 2nd brew was the proclaimed best beer in the world so I had to give it a try. Delirium Tremens a delectable Belgian golden ale with a 9% ABV! It even came in a fancy Belgian beer glass. 3rd and last brew was a Lefthand Sawtooth Ale. Good beer but not my favorite of the three I tried. If you get a chance go check out Buster's and have a few beers. You will not be disappointed.

It's All Good In Da Hood

First Lady Laura Bush visited the I-35W bridge collapse scene today. Hip-Hip-Hurray!! We are now safe and secure, the first lady has toured the destruction to uphold her image of giving a shit. I feel so much better now that she has seen the destruction like a Walt Disney tour. WTG Laura, you get a frickin' cookie for your work.

Flat Tire

That would be me. Petey and I went to Murphy-Hanrehan Park to do some mtn biking. About half way through I ended up getting a flat tire. Luckily we were close to the road. We huffed it up the dirt road to grab a spare tube from my Jeep. Lesson learned to make sure to bring a pump and tube with you on longer trails. Murphy was a great ride with many fast curves and some obstacles. I can imagine riding a few more times out there and we could make it around the 10 mile loop fairly fast. Out in the prairie portion of the trail it looked like the salt flats because of the dry weather. I don't think you can even classify Murphy lake as a lake anymore, more like a swampy marsh. After the ride we got to enjoy an ice cold Spotted Cow. Saturday morning we will ride at Harmon Park or Terrace Oaks. I also need to start looking for a different helmet. I need to get something with better airflow.

Here's a video of my attempt at an obstacle. Pete did end up doing it on the way back.
