Geocaching
Pete got me addicted to a new activity....sport...activity...um not sure what you would call it. Geocaching is basically a scavenger hunt with your GPS. You go to Geocaching.com to find local caches near you. You download the coordinates to your GPS and the search is on. There are multiple sizes of caches from a micro cache that is the size of a pencil eraser to larger caches the size of an ammo box which you can exchange trinkets. It's a good excuse to get out of the house and discover what is in your neighborhood. Just in a 20 mile radius there are over 2,000 different cache. I've only found 26 and hidden 3 cache.

The Great White North
OK not Canada but pretty damn close. Aimee and I drove up to Duluth for the weekend for a mini vacation or "Babymoon" before Baby B arrives. We stayed at Dodge's Log Lodges (say that 3 times fast) right on Lake Superior. Dodge's is located 11 miles north of Duluth off of scenic HWY 61. We stayed in the Apsen which is a little 325sqft cabin with a 3/4 bath, queen size bed, sleeper sofa, little kitchen, stone fireplace and a view that is to die for. You step out on the porch and you are looking right at Lake Superior with giant granite boulders below.
After settling in Aimee and I drove up to Two Harbors to look around. The weather was just beautiful in the upper 40's so we stopped and took a small stroll on a little pier that goes to a light signal (I don't think it is technically a light house). Everything was pretty much closed so we drove to Betty's Pies for dinner. No pie for me but Aimee tried the strawberry rhubarb and she seemed to like it. We then settled into our cabin, lit a fire and just relaxed reading some books and magazines. A whole lot of laziness! It was great!
Sunday I woke up at 7am to watch a gorgeous sunrise over Lake Superior. Aimee and I drove up to Grand Marais for the day. Just an FYI winter months + Sunday = nothing open!! We ate lunch at Sven and Ole's which I am convinced is the most overrated pizza of all time. I could get the same pizza at a Holiday gas station. We hopped in the car and drove up the Gun Flint Trail to Gun Flint Lake to have a look at some lodges. Then the whole ride back we couldn't help but talk about going up to the BWCA and camping. On the back page of the Outdoor News they always feature a lake and that lake was Brule Lake in BWCA. We thought it would be a fun trip to canoe the lake, fish and camp. Ugh! All of this warm weather just makes us think about the outdoors and camping. Maybe next year!
We checked out of our cabin today (Monday) and drove down to Canal St. and shopped around. With a hot coco in hand we walked around to all of the shops. Again it was a beautiful sunny day. With our tummies grumbling there is only 1 place to go for a cure, Wisconsin! Yes Wisconsin, over the border we go to hit up the Anchor Bar for some burgers and freshly cut french fries. On the way out of WI we picked up some Spotted Cow.

This is the view from the cabin porch. The ice was about 100 yards out.
The Aspen. These little cabins cost the same as staying in a hotel in Duluth. It is totally worth it for the relaxation. The owners are selling quarter shares of these little cabins for $80k if you are interested.

The Submarines
I was listening to The Current (89.3) yesterday and Mary Lucia played the in studio appearance from last week of The Submarines. Some good stuff from this band.

Me Again
My favorite season is starting to come to an end. The snow is melting and before you know it spring will have sprung. I was able to get out ice fishing a lot this year thanks to an understanding fantastic wife. The lakes fished this year include Crystal, Marion, Orchard, Prior and Mille Lacs. I would like to forget about Mille Lacs but I am optimistic that there are fish still left in that lake. I guess we will confirm this when we go up in August. I caught lots of crappie but nothing with size which is kind of odd. I'm surprised all of the hours fished that I didn't pick up a pike or walleye. The new Clam ice house worked awesome because now 2 people can fish 2 holes in the house or I can fit up to 4 people and some tip-ups outside. I'll have to check out Orchard lake in the spring for some crappie. Check out that whopper on the right. That monster bluegill was caught on Prior, not surprised there.
