My Review of Giro Hex Bike Helmet

Originally submitted at REI

Giro® Hex™ combines a muscular, progressive style with versatility and integrity--everything you need and want in a trail-riding helmet.

Bad Design

1out of 5

Sizing: Feels true to size

Pros: Good ventilation

Cons: Heavy

Best Uses: Mountain biking

Describe Yourself: Avid Cyclist

Was this a gift?: No

Went on 1 trail ride and the helmet loosened up 4 times while riding. Whenever you go over an obstacle or bump your head moves back and the clasp would hit the back of my neck and loosen the helmet. Very poor design. It is also on the heavy side. It seems to have a little too much foam.

Vacation

Time for me to update this blog.

At the beginning of August Aimee, Heidi and I went on a family vacation along with my parents and their good friends, Jim and Jill. We stayed a week at Aspen Resort on Pelican Lake in Orr, MN. I have been coming up to Pelican Lake since I was about 13 or 14 years old and it is turning into a vacation tradition every 2 years. It's a beautiful lake with lots of wildlife and great fishing. One morning I was fishing and I was surrounded by 6 Loons and every day you would see a few Bald Eagles perching in the tree tops or circling around in the sky. And yes there are Pelicans at Pelican Lake. If the beauty of this lake still exists 35 years from now, I would retire here.

There are 12 or so resorts on Pelican Lake but what is nice about Aspen Resort is that it is the only one with a pool and very kid friendly. Why do you need a pool on a lake you ask? 65% of the lake is less than 10 feet so their are a lot of weeds and they grow tall and thick. The only beach is on the south side of the lake. Heidi got to go swimming in a pool for the first time and loved it. She also liked to go on the swing which turned into a new word for her, "Wee-Wee". No it's not a bathroom code. When we pushed her we would say, "Weeeee....Weeeeee....".

First lesson learned. Close the bathroom doors.

We stayed in the Blue Heron cabin. It's a 3 bedroom 2 bath cabin. Personally I thought it was a little small. It did have air conditioning which was a life saver at the beginning of the week.

_MG_7807

Ducks and a lot of them. The dock boys have been feeding them since they were ducklings so they keep coming back every year. Heidi liked to chase after them and say "quack quack".

Sunset

Sunrise. I got out on the water everyday at 5:30am so I could fish for a few hours and then get back to spend time with my two ladies.

Pelicans enjoying the sunrise too.

A loon in the morning. I wish I had a 400mm lens for some closer shots.

The fishing was great. Lots of nothern pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass. The panfish were hard to find. Pelican Lake is known for its large bluegill but it has been over fished the past few years. They tend to run in cycles and this was a down year for them. There are large walleye in this lake if you want to hunt for them but I didn't feel like wasting hours on catching one.

I'm on a boat! Heidi's first boat ride. She seemed to like it even with the PFD on.

The rest of the pictures can been seen HERE. I would really like to make this a yearly trip if possible. If not we will be back up in a couple years.

Red Bull Flugtag

I was 1 of 90,000 people along the banks of the Mississippi at the Red Bull Flugtag last Saturday. Red Bull estimated that there would only be 40,000 spectators at the Twin Cities first Red Bull Flugtag event located at Harriet Island in St. Paul. What in the hell is Flugtag you ask? Basically 37 teams were selected out of hundreds to build homemade flying machines and you take a leap off of a 3o foot flight launching deck into the Mississippi. It's not just about the distance of your flight but also the creativity of your craft. With the popularity of the event I can only assume that it will not be long before Flugtag returns.

Here is a link to all of my pictures.

Jay Cooke State Park

Aimee and I (and Zoey) had a great weekend with friends at Jay Cooke State Park. The best part was there were hardly any mosquitoes! BUT on the other had the ticks were out in full force. We spent more time relaxing at camp than exploring the park so we'll have to take another trip to Jay Cooke. Thank you Grandma N. for watching Heidi!!

Here is a link to the pictures.

Zoo

Aimee, Heidi and I went to the Zoo last Monday. The rain kept us indoors which was OK except they had part of the African Forest exhibit closed because they had to make some repairs to the animal enclosure.

Didn't take too many pictures but you can find them here.

Lake Winnibigoshish

This years fishing opener was a complete failure for walleye fishing but on the other hand the weather was unbelievable, the beer was cold and I got to witness two good friends get married at Gooseberry State Park. So I got that going for me, which is nice...

This was the view from our camp on Friday night.

New Lens

I quickly tested out my new 70-200mm f/2.8L lens today. The color, depth of field and sharpness are excellent. I will have to go to the MN Zoo to give it a workout.

This is Corey with the 31" Northern that he caught and almost pulled his fishing pole out of his hand as the fish hit right at the boat. We only had a cell phone camera with us. I also caught a 35" Northern the day before. The fishing wasn't too bad despite the weather front moving through. We had to fight 20-30 MPH winds each day.

Organic Batter Blaster - It may seem gross to get your pancakes from a whipped-cream style steel can but damn these were very good pancakes and they don't take long to cook either. They are also USDA Certified Organic. If you get a chance pick up a can at your grocery store and give it a try!

We went to the MN Zoo today and got our year pass. I tested out the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L lens that I borrowed from a coworker. The weather was pretty crummy but the lens performed well. I did however have to crank up the ISO to get some faster shutter speeds. Here is a link to all of the pictures.
